Time travel in the history of art into contemporary art

Photography x Painting

21 century madonna and child

Possibility of crossing time and space

With the concepts of "transformation "and "hybridization", I make use of the iconic Western classical image and through the addition of the Asian character in the composition to reflect the 21st century in contemporary art.

Concept

The use of crossing the culture

From the past and nowadays, the Madonna and Child, with the painting of the culture of thousands of years ago. How to share the cultural heritage that still exists, I explore the loss of this generation of culture. As a Taiwanese, my husband is also a Hakka. Therefore, I want to create a 21-century madonna and child with Taiwanese elements to reflect the complexity of the image in our contemporary world. So I am trying to combine the image of Hakka Flower Cloth such as Malan Breton-Taiwanese-born designer, appeared on the runway at the 2015 New York Spring / Summer Fashion Show "A Journey to Taiwan", and the costume inspired by Hakka flowers appeared on the runway.

Taiwan Culture | Classic, Retro and Innovation of Hakka Flower Cloth

The Hakka culture is derived from the Heluo culture of the Tang and Song Dynasties that was preserved when the Han people of the Central Plains moved south and merged with the southern Guangdong and southern Guangdong cultures native to the Guangdong region. People are concentrated in the area of Taozhu Miao; now the Hakka traditional "flower cloth" has become synonymous with the Hakka in Taiwan. With an extravagant and simple luxury, it is the memory of many Hakkas in the Taiwanese of the Older generation and is closely integrated with life. One of the representatives. The bright and gorgeous big peony on the Hakka flower cloth symbolizes joy and wealth. The full name of the Taiwan flower cloth is called the Taiwan Hakka flower cloth, and the local people in Taiwan prefer to call it "Grandma's red flower cloth" kindly.

The innovation of floral pattern
From the beginning, the Taiwan flower cloth was a "hybrid" combining traditional Chinese aesthetics with Japanese national characteristics. The main peony pattern can be divided into Chinese peony-full and simple, red with big green; Japanese peony-delicate and delicate, with gold edges on the petals. In addition to all kinds of peonies, pine bamboo plum, Japanese chrysanthemum, cherry blossoms, orchids, hibiscus flowers, etc. are also the protagonists of the cloth; and the bamboo forest wild cranes, mandarin ducks, phoenix and other patterns that contain beautiful residences are also incorporated into them. In the composition, the use of elements such as white strokes, fan-shaped elements, and rhombuses are quite Dongying.

Taiwanese of Madonna and Child with religious freedom

6 / 2020,  oil on canvas , 67 X 100 CM

Taiwan Democracy and religious freedom

Taiwan is a vital value of a democratic society which includes inclusive and diverse religious beliefs. Also, Taiwan is one of the countries with the highest degree of religious freedom in the Indo-Pacific region. As a Taiwanese, under this system of religious freedom, I want to explore the relationship between Taiwan's democratic ideology and religious freedom - With the religious background of the Madonna and Child, embracing the concept of religious freedom in Taiwan.  In Chinese society, Taiwan is a system that encompasses multiple cultures and values religious liberty and freedom of speech.

This work is inspired by Raphael. The Solly Madonna by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael was painted somewhere between 1500 and 1504. The virgin Mary is reading a book. I took The Solly Madonna as a reference, and made such a gesture that I saw, and paint the book of Taiwan Democracy and religious freedom with painting. When I saw Solly Madonna painting, I guessed that Madonna should be reading a story about the Bible. The beginning of creation in the Old Testament, now in the 21st century, speech freedom is changing the development of human society, preparing to open up a new century, so I put The two images are combined to respond to the painting.

Yet, Taiwan's religious freedom is not innate. Whether it is to prohibit the mother tongue from preaching or even use the power of the country to expel and arrest believers of a particular religion, it is a bloody tearful page in Taiwan's religious history. Including the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, it has also coerced by authoritarian governments. Today's freedom is the result of many Taiwanese predecessors who stood up to fight against injustice, blood and sweat.

And this book (Distance between Taiwan and Democracy) influenced me to think about Taiwan's democratic system. Freedom and democracy are Taiwan's proud achievements, from the implementation of local autonomy, the lifting of martial law to the direct election of the president, and even the second party rotation Taiwan's democracy is not only a model for emerging democracies but also the pride of Taiwanese. The book proposes various social issues that extend the regression of democracy. the authors hope that through discussion and thoughtful review and attention to the problem of freedom and the rule of law, otherwise, Taiwan's democracy will not have much distance from evil politics.

The book explores freedom of speech, academic freedom, etc., which also inspired me to think about art.

Will political modality affect artists?

Imagine that if an artist wants to protect his freedom of creation, but is unable to have freedom of speech, how should creators who originally possessed the freedom to adapt to such drastic changes?

I think that "If the use of art to remember life will become a sin, then culture may break down." Therefore, I believe that to create unique culture and artworks, there must be an environment that allows free expression and free creation; The mission is to think and breakthrough barriers and lead human civilization to a higher level. "

Today, we look around and see that in many parts of the world, religious freedom is restricted, and different religious beliefs cannot live together peacefully. The relationship between religion, culture and art is also interlocking, and it is a part of our life. Tolerance of diverse religious beliefs, culture and art is essential for a democratic society.

Crossing the culture of thousands of years ago

From the past and nowadays, in the 21st century, the Madonna and Child, with Chinese painting of the culture of thousands of years ago. How to share the cultural heritage that still exists, I explore the loss of this generation of culture.

Concept

The use of a combination across times

Transforming the concept in my art practice. I added the concept of Oriental elements, Travelers Among Mountains and Streams. One of the treasures of the town hall of the Palace Museum in Taipei, the spatial expression of the Travelers Among Mountains and Streams and the towering central peak in the middle of the picture, which is a monument is a spiritual sign a square-folded ink line outlines the whole frame. The raindrops simulate the texture of northern soil and rock. The first-line waterfall that pours down on the central peak becomes the right blank and shows the sense of distance. Just separated the distant view and the middle (near) view. The nodules of the branches visible in the middle scene shortened the gap between the intermediate stage and the audience. The central mountain pushed farther, and the pivotal scene is closer. Under the action of the two, the hill and viewer separated a sense of distance, which is difficult to measure. The division method of the principal peak in two-thirds of the picture is close to the golden section that Leonardo found during the Renaissance 500 years later. This idea came from Da Vinci ’s The Virgin of the Rocks. In response to Da Vinci ’s work, and again, in order to create an Asian sense, the background picture integrated with the background of ancient ink painting, and then the 21st-century mother and child series of creations are incorporated into it to create the fusion and complexity of contemporary art images.

Thousand-year Culture | Paradigm and spread in landscape painting of ancient china

Hanging scroll, ink and light colors on silk, 206.3 x 103.3 cm, National Palace Museum in Taipei

Fan K'uan, a native of Hua-yuan (modern Yao-hsien) in Shensi province, often traveled the area between the capital and Loyang. Although he was known for his magnanimous character, straightforward personality, and fondness of drink and the Tao, he is famous now for his landscape painting. In his early study of painting, he followed the style of the Shantung artist Li Ch'eng (919-967). Later, however, he came to realize that if he really wanted to portray the land, he had to take Nature as his teacher rather than other artists or their works. After all, a personal landscape exists in nature and in the mind. Fan K'uan thereupon went to Mt. Hua and secluded himself among the forests and mountains, devoting himself to observing the effects of atmospheric, weather, and seasonal changes on the scenery. Contemporaries thereupon praised him for being able to commune with the mountains. This masterpiece is a testament to his skills and ideas in landscape painting.

The clusters of vegetation at the top of the tall mountain here are actually distant forests clinging to a precarious perches. Running along the central axis of the scroll, the central mountain dominates the scene in a classic example of Northern Sung monumental landscape painting. The rooftops of a building complex stand out in the right middleground. By the cluster of rocks in the right foreground is a path on which a mule train makes its way. A cascade as slender as silk falls from the heights above, culminating in the stream rushing down in eddies towards the foreground. From near to far, Fan K'uan has described with realistic detail the solemn grandeur of a majestic landscape. Fan K'uan rendered the mountains and slopes with jagged outline strokes and filled them with brush dabs resembling raindrops--techniques that highlight the monumental and eternal features of the mountains. To the right of the mule train, among the leaves, is the signature of Fan K'uan, a final touch by an artist to epitomize the insignificance of humans (including himself) compared to Nature.

Inspiration / Research

Mark Steven Greenfield

Greenfield uses classic Renaissance images of the Madonna and Child to address our current political climate. A powerful image of a Black Madonna and Child are placed in a circular area within a gold-leafed field. Two or three areas are filled with his signature graphic marks that tag the image. Behind the Madonna and Child are various scenes of a Ku Klux Klansman being lynched, or Nazis in a fiery explosion – scenes of retribution toward those whose racist, genocidal agendas have caused the death and torture of countless souls.  He whose stylistic approach shapes the content of his work, demonstrating how the graphic power of the mark has developed into complex patterns of language – from an ancient impulse to leave a record of our ideas and stories to a populist expression whose graphic power communicates the strange complexity of the image in our contemporary world. From his work, it inspired me to discuss the issue between religion and national consciousness. He also mentioned his race and the integration and transformation of his ideas which inspired me on my art practice.
